What are hashtags?

To get technical, a hashtag is a metadata tag that is prefaced by the hash symbol, #. Hashtags are widely used on social media like Twitter and Instagram as a form of user-generated tagging that enables cross-referencing of content sharing a subject or theme.

So, why do we need them? Where do they go? What do they even do?

Content creators need hashtags so new readers can discover their posts! Clicking on a hashtag takes you to a page with a bunch of other content that uses the same hashtag. So, if you were to go to #digitalmarketing on Instagram, you would see a bunch of posts from around the world relating to digital marketing. You can view each post and discover new creators.

Do I really need to incorporate them into my social media strategy?
